bill harcleroad, director of Campus Activities and Leadership, presented on SUNY Oneonta’s  “Events to Experiences” initiative at the Association of College Unions International conference in Chicago and again at the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities conference in Hershey this past week. bill also presented two other sessions at Hershey; one on the LEAD@Oneonta program and another on our Red Dragon Flight School initiative to rebuild organizational capacity.

From Events to Experiences: Lessons from the World of Food Science
The world of food science teaches us that perception does indeed influence reality and how to engage all our senses to create memorable experiences. We will review techniques used in the best restaurants and corporations and consider how they could be applied to campus activities to create truly memorable experiences. This topic is incredibly relevant as we move out of pandemic mode and rebuild our campus programs. Using lessons from food science and marketing, we learn how to give events “Sticktion” as well as utilizing all of the senses to enhance the perception of the event. Specific applications will be derived from two podcasts and one book along with one year of implementation data to look at how to maximize the experiences we provide to our students.

Administering a Campus-wide Multi-tier Leadership Program
LEAD@Oneonta is a comprehensive campus-wide leadership program developed in 2007 that is, primarily, administered via Engage. Online educational modules, event attendance, and experiential learning have always been a part of LEAD even before the co-curricular paths module but that has only strengthened the program. We use event attendance, organization membership, forms, and Paths to administer the program. Oh and it has 3 levels which build on each other…

Red Dragon Flight School: Rebuilding Organizational Capacity
Focusing on engagement for retention has never been more important. Preparing student leaders to be ready to engage on day one is crucial. Red Dragon Flight School was developed to quickly rebuild organizational capacity by focusing on group dynamics and how-to information utilizing open educational resources, virtual meetings, and tasks.
